On Saturday, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus is a “serious concern” and it might delay the lifting of restrictions.
A study conducted by the UK government showed that the Delta variant, first detected in India, is around 60 percent more transmissible than the Alpha variant, which was first detected in Kent county.
The variant accounts for 96% of new Covid-19 cases in Britain over a one-week period. Last week, the country saw the highest number of Covid-19 cases in a day since February. This sudden surge might delay the lifting of the restrictions, which were earlier planned to be lifted on June 21.
