one of the key doctors treating eman
Eman after losing 100 kilos

In a surprise development , Dr Aparna Govil Bhaskar, Section Chief- Bariatric Surgery, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, one of the key doctors treating Eman Abd El Aty, today ‘resigned from the care of Eman.   In her facebook post, where she announced her resignation, she expressed her emotional anguish about a video where Eman’s sister, Shaimaa, accused the doctors treating her of lying about her medical status. Bhaskar had flown to Egypt to bring Eman to India three months backs.

Eman has been undergoing treatment for obesity and other medical problems at Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital. In an interview with Healthpost last month in Mumbai, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala had expressed his satisfaction over the progress Eman was making. Here is the full text of the Facebook post where Dr Bhaskar announced her resignation:

I HEREBY RESIGN FROM THE CARE OF EMAN ABD EL ATY WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

Some incidents in our lives change us forever at a very basic level. 3 months back I flew to Egypt to help Eman to come to India and the rest is history.

Cut to today and I promise that when my 3 year old son grows up, I will not let him take up medicine as a career.

I write this with great anguish that medicine is a thankless job.

I had thought that Eman's case would go down in annals of medicine as one of the biggest medical challenges ever overcome. I feel extremely saddened today that though the challenges have been overcome, it has created history but of a very different kind.

We put our heart and soul into her care. No stones were left unturned. The team of doctors, nurses and physiotherapists toiled day in and day out to make this one patient live. We didn't just provide medical care, we fell in love with Eman. She became our obsession. Even my 3 year old son made peace with the fact that in his mother's life at the moment Eman aunty takes precedence

I guess medicine makes you soft and compassionate and empathy tends to overshadow all other emotions.

But today I feel angry and deeply dissappointed.

Unfortunately Eman's case is an example of the worst kind of assault that a patient's family can do to a doctor.

It will be an example for patients to learn how to use the hospital system to your advantage by hook or by crook.

It will be an example to follow for uncaring relatives that one can just dump their sister in a hospital and have the best time of their life.

It will be an example for young doctors that they must never ever go out of their way to help someone and save a life because it can backfire badly.

It is an example which proves that doctors must play safe and defensive and never take up challenges.

What her sister has done is worse than physically assaulting a doctor. She has broken the bond of trust between doctors and patients. I am appalled at the irony that today when Eman’s health is the best that it has ever been in last 25 years, her sister chooses to go down this path.

We do not need to prove anything to anyone as the truth is out there for all to see.

I protest against any kind of assault on doctors and I reserve the right to refuse. I believe that if a patient or her family does not have faith in her doctors or hospital then they must look for an alternative. It should also be an example to younger doctors that you do not have to take things lying down.

I hereby officially resign from the care of Eman Abd El Aty with immediate effect.

Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker
Section Chief- Bariatric Surgery, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai

I agree with Dr, yes it hurts. And it may have hurt your soul. Her sister is just one individual who has done this just to get some attention, we never know. Whole world has been praising you and your efforts. Why to count her opinion? You know from the bottom of your heart that you did the right job, the world encourages you, laud your efforts i think your actions has given much importance to her sister. Dogs barks when an elephant walks! To the world you are a gigantic humble human being!

Keyur shah    2017/04/30 10:52:28

Mam, sharing ur pain... once my respected proff. told me during my undergraduation.." try to become a good doctor not a great doctor". I think time has come when we should treat from mind not frm heart..should treat by sympathy nt by empathy.

Dr sakil Khan    2017/04/28 12:05:44

This is the problem of these rich people, who fattened themselves by gobbling up everything and spare nothing for poor . To them everything in thus world belong to them and everything are purchasable including love and dedication of Doctors.

Gonong Pertin    2017/04/28 10:16:01

Medical profession doesn't work on somebodies appreciation or thanks. Our simple goal is to save life. We are species who are known for tolerance. Dr Aparna govil bhaskar shouldn't stop because of some people's meaninglessness hate or hurt. You are appreciated for the care u provided sacrificing your social life and time. .Dr Bhaskar your are a great human being continue to be a great human being. .

Dr chandrashekar     2017/04/28 09:52:29

You just eloquently expressed what we in medical profession still think about our patients. I don,t know if Eman,s sister ever experienced this kind of dedication from Drs in her country. Still her actions are very reprehensible. Do not loose faith in your life as a dr. & also have faith in INDIAN patients. Go with your heart.

Dr. Pradip Deore    2017/04/28 07:56:14

It is unfortunate for Eman and shiamaa can't get best care for their own mistake.but the whole episode has brought some lessons to light 1.today the takers of medicine as carrier will be less 2.dont think that everything can be cured completely 3.dont go out of the way.i think u have taken a good decision don't feel guilty and you have discharged your expert duty and it is for the patient to search for some other place and get the care.dont be disheartened as such incidents are bound to come.

Drmanmohan singh    2017/04/28 05:23:47

I fully support her. All the doctors advising her about staying on are not in a state to say so. It is what SHE has suffered and endured and feels. Yes, unless it is a matter of life and death, and no help is on the way , one should persist. But under the circumstance the Doctor endured and suffered, I fully support her.

Bhogal    2017/04/28 03:22:19

Dr Bhasker I support your action.society and system are responsible for loosing honest and good doctor.

Dr Gokaran manjhi    2017/04/27 09:01:23

I strongly agree with you.

Dr.RAVI KISHORE    2017/04/27 07:13:21

i am aginst your action 100% it's your duty to help the patient and support him and his relatives not to ask them to thank you for doing your job and by the way this patient made you famous and known all over the world

Hossam Yakout    2017/04/27 01:30:44

I think we as a doctor should be more professional than emotional. No need to go out of the way to help anyone because none of the patients comes to the rescue of the doctors when they are assaulted. We do not get any privilege in the society over other citizens (no tax rebates, no concessions or reservations etc.) then why society expects us to serve it more than an average citizen??!!

Dr. Amarendra Kumar    2017/04/26 12:37:02

U truely are inspiration Dr. Bhaskar for us.. the young doctors.. we do have the right to refuse.. and dis is something the judge of the courtrooms should also know...

Dr Shireen     2017/04/26 12:17:08

Dr Bhaskar the medical fraternity feels your pain. Actually the medics have become the favourite punching bags for the masses. Thanks to our political class. They have successfully hidden their failure, to provide reasonable public healthcare, behind this sham.

Siddhartha Gupta    2017/04/26 12:14:04

Madam, whatever happened with you (senior doctor), we junior doctors facing almost everyday, don't take a step back... We are doctors.. Can do anything.. But on the basis of humanity.. We have kept quite.. People are not ready to accept us also as human beings as they are, although we try our level best, if something happens, it ends with abuses and assaults...

Dr Vijay    2017/04/26 12:04:27

Nowadays Patients & attendants are highly nonobligatory. Time has come for professional approach. They don't deserve sympathy. No one should be helped out of way. Good decision to be away.

Dr.. Pravin Kumar     2017/04/26 11:30:09

dear Dr.. what you have done is a way of standing up to the cause of being a human than being a demigod or doctor, we don't need worship .....all we ask for is basic human decency which is very hard for these lesser mortals, your denial to treat lesser mortals and ungrateful beings is laudable. first of all we are responsible for our family ...if our work hurts anyway the sanctum of family in spite of our sacrifices .....we need not work...for they are many ways for a hard working person to earn a living.

dr j sarat    2017/04/26 11:24:38

It happen, in every profession , let's see other side of coin why her sister did this ? What is her motive ? Every time they can't offer thanks to doctor. Don't be emotional . It's there decision respect it same way we respect your decision, it's give and take business, they paid for treatment...lets move ...

Gajanan mugatkar    2017/04/26 11:20:04

Why resign Instead sue the family. Call a press conference and let the world know the truth. It will help the faternity.

Viraj jaiswal    2017/04/26 09:52:39

Eman's sister is not such an important person in Dr.Aparna's life that she resign from her passionate job. She is extreamely passionate and dedicated and this 'force' inside cannot be killed by the immaturity of a relative of the patient. Even if the patient has been mean it shouldn't matter. for a doctor what matters is the victory of 'Health' over 'ill health' in this battle where she is soldier of the creator's will. Even in corporate life many A situations come where one's genuine efforts don't bear fruit or is condemned and criticised by many, but you can't resign in such situations. As far as you have been genuine, you just close your ears and revel in the victory, for Victory lies in the effort not in the results!

I totally support you Dr.Aparna Govil and salute you for taking such a bold step. I think this is an inspiration to all doctors. Every day one or the other doctors have become targets of these thankless people . So this is the way we should all stand united for this .Not only that we should get this published in all media as one of the doctors rightly pointed out. The media gives so much publicity on attacks on doctors and when these assailants are punished, it does not come in media. Everyone should be made aware that a law exists which says it is an unbailable offence if anyone attacks on doctors. And every hospital and clinic shd b equipped with cctv cameras and a big notice of the copy of this law. This is just the right step to prevent attacks on doctors. Again my whole hearted support to Dr. Aparna.

Dr. Neena    2017/04/26 09:39:23

Egyptians as a whole are nice people but this lady is very ungrateful.Dr Bhaskar you have done your best..Hats off to you...I feel bad and pity for eman the patient...still do the best for her...God bless you and our profession..Dr Ghori..CMO. .JSSH..Mysore.

Salahuddin Khan Ghori     2017/04/26 09:24:11

I too condemn such acts it's time we must have new clear n precise rules regarding patient status and doctors position. V need a change just so v don't end up battered every now and then.

Dr. Priti Rajak Kathariya (pt.)    2017/04/26 09:03:30

I as a Citizen of this country firmly stand by Dr. Aparna Bhaskar and Dr. Lakdawala and the team Rather than keeping quiet I would request the team to hold a press conference and expose the patients relative and false accusation

Madhukar Nayak    2017/04/26 07:55:59

We have become Public Property, like Govt property to be attacked on whims of anyone.Stand with Dr Aparna and the action.let the Sister take care ..

Dr D Bhattacharyya    2017/04/26 07:34:11

I totally support Dr Bhaskar. Dr Ajay Chhikara General Surgeon.

Dr Ajay Chhikara    2017/04/26 07:13:54

I feel that money and time and effort u spent on a international patient is a shame. There are many poor invalid people in India that you could have looked after with all that money and dedication. That Emma and her sister are grate less just adds weight to my statement

Anita    2017/04/26 05:35:53

Don't be so emotional boss, it happens to every doctor at every level, just do Ur work, let them know wat ur doing, rest they will decide....

Dr sriharsha    2017/04/26 05:16:34

Well said HP dear ..Oh what a relief .....I was very downcast when I heard this story of Syma talking against Dr Mufazzal . He is the blessed doctor no doubt , but this casts a slur on the whole doctor community . You did right Aparna ..this is not emotional but rational . Please continue good work but teach a lesson to thankless people

Dr Sanjay Gupta Nephro     2017/04/26 02:28:01

ARPIT GUPTA    2017/04/26 02:25:34

Dr Bhaskar . I agree to disagree with ur action of leaving a patient treatment in between while she is recovering &responding to ur treatment so well. Just because some one tried to distract U from Ur mission.U do not do every thing for gains . Have U ever thought of a soldier who is always ready for supreme sacrifice for U & me. Have we ever said a single word in his praise. He is also being maltreated in Kashmir. Should he quit his duty. The freedom fighters were also tortured during fight for freedom . Had they all resigned from their mission where all of us would have been ?Challenges will always come in the path of good things..So never get disheartened & leave Ur noble mission in between. U & Ur team is not doing it for EMAN or her family only. Ur doing it for the whole of MEDICAL profession.More so for INDIA. When the whole lot of docs in the world had refused to take up her case .Ur team came forward & took the challenge & are succeeding in it.We are proud of U. Kindly give another thought to Ur decision .Come back & fulfill Ur obligation as a doc & as responsible member of the team treating EMAN. U all are doing wonderful job which no one could dare to take up in world.Hope I have not offended U & Ur team.GOD bless us all.

R S Saini    2017/04/26 01:08:00

I really salute Dr Bhaskar and i will support all the actions taken by him. Because of all this things in our society we are everyday lòoseing great peoples around us. The system which is running now adays is very difficult to change so finally we ourself should surrender. Feel so sad but the jobs which Dr Bhaskar had done in Medical History will be remember everytime.

Pema Wanchuk Lepcha    2017/04/26 01:04:25

Aparna, did you not know that the way to hell is paved with good intentions??? Pretty late in life to learn this lesson, but thankfully, better late than never. Why did you fly to Egypt to get her? Why did you allow yourself to get personally involved into her case? Haven't we all been taught to do our jobs professionally only, keeping all emotions and overconcern at bay? Why was her complete treatment done free of cost (as I read in news)? All the above are enough invitations for trouble. Anyway, let it be a lesson for future. No need of taking it so seriously. All this kind of stuff keeps happening in lives of surgeons so just relax. In future, charge your patients well, don't ever go out of the way except for a very few friends and relatives and above all, just act professionally with your patients. If you follow these cardinals, you will never again regret as you are doing now. BTW, how can you resign from her case if you were the Surgeon in charge? This FB outburst can get you into serious legal trouble---- BEWARE!!

KJ Singh    2017/04/26 01:01:16

People do trust good doctors but you will always find bad apples on both sides. May be this doctor while writing was impulsive - but when you says Doctors have right to refusal then what's the difference between a doctor and commercial products/services. If thats the case, then the relationship is purely give & take; then don't demand respect!

Prashant    2017/04/25 11:33:00

I totally support Dr Bhaskar and d statement "right to refuse ".Its indeed a thankless job nowadays so no point goin dat extra mile ...!!

Dr sunil     2017/04/25 11:30:54

Dr bhaskar has done the right thing .if a patient and family is ungrateful better to leave them to their fate .

Dr Ritu kumar    2017/04/25 11:27:37

Doctor patient relationship has been in a very bad shape now a days.Doctor should be very conscious while treating the patient.

Dr.Umesh Chandra Singh     2017/04/25 11:23:22

Sooner the medical fraternity recognize the fact that the patient community is not the same as it used to be few decades back better it is for them to live on peace. In spite of any scenario of any magnitude, we should not get emotionally get carried away and keep our interest at bay. More difficult times ahead.... must admit !!!

DA    2017/04/25 11:04:28

Yes, Dr. Baskar, once you have given your life and soul for treating this patient at the cost of your family life, and the patient or relative just passes rude remarks about your treatment, then it's time to stop it right there. If they have trust issues, let them look for an alternative. You took a brave decision!

Anitha Manohar     2017/04/25 11:02:01

The respect towards doctors in India is touching a new low everyday. This is no longer considered a noble profession. With some of the reforms and decisions of the government there is no way that the profession will gain it's golden era once again... Happy that Sushrutha was not born in this era.

Dr Vaibhav Chapara    2017/04/25 11:01:23

Well done Dr Aparna. It is really worrying patients , media, Govt and public at large becoming hostile towards Doctors.

Dr Manoj Vatsa    2017/04/25 10:41:55

These days it has become hazardous to take up challenging cases. In majority of the cases the attendant are sensible and understand that doctors do their efforts well and some problems may or may not occur and the problem may be solved or the failure can also be there and that the doctor did his job in the best possible way. But few devil attendants spoil the hard work of the doctors and sow the seeds of disinterest distrust dysempathy and disdain by their acts. Doctors are forced to regret why did they take a challenging dangerous thankless case. We must take up only those cases where we are sure that we can deliver the things and not take up the useless cases where we may or may not succeed and then the attendants vent their frustration and drag us in courts.

Dr. Ajay Aditya     2017/04/25 10:36:16

Dear Doctor, I appreciate your decision not to treat such patients and their relatives. They deserve nothing but to go back to the land of their Pharoahs who will either treat them or mummify them. But my request is do not take a vow not to make your son a doctor.Let him come of age and decide for himself. After all not all in this world are bad.Maybe your son will make this world a better place to live in.He will also be one of the best doctors in this world like you.

DR VANORA NONGRUM    2017/04/25 10:35:25

Dr.Aparna I m agree with u.after 20_30 years of study and experience and regular hard work pt relative took a second to blame a doctor.Really this is thankless Profession.

Dr.P.K.Gupta    2017/04/25 10:31:09

Dr.Aparna it must have been extremely painful for you to take this step .Bold move .It is a lesson for all doctors young and old to never make patients more important than family .

DR.TEJASWINI DIVAKAR    2017/04/25 10:26:52

So sad to know your story , i being an Anaesthesiologist by proffession can understand best about thankless job we are doing for the society . I have same strong feeling that my daiughter should never take Medicine as her career.

Dr Vineet Gupta    2017/04/25 10:21:19

Gr8 dr aparna, very good decision.I support your Action. This thankless society is responsible for loosing good doctors and will definitely suffer

Dr Abhishek Manu    2017/04/25 10:10:54

Right to reject..Welcome statement Dr ..

Dr Ravish    2017/04/25 10:08:43

Dr Bhaskar, it saddens me to read your letter. But I fully agree and support you. As a doctor I was following this case very closely, it is no less than a miracle what you and your team has done/achieved. We all are reading the stories everyday about the miseries doctors are facing not only from relatives but also from the action of some politicians. This is going to have very bad repercussions. Not only you but there are lot many people from our fraternity who don't want their kids to take medicine as a career. But as someone already wrote God will definitely take care of you and people like you. God bless...

Rajesh Misra    2017/04/25 10:05:51

Dr. Aparna, don't get disheartened. Continue to work for welfare of mankind.

Kamlesh Kanodia     2017/04/25 10:02:35

Don't go out of way to treat the patient. It is now thankless job. Good and bold decision. I support and respect your decision.

Dr. A. K. Mehta    2017/04/25 09:37:29

Dr aparna it is not the humans who judge but god.always have faith, things do turn ugly at times but we must keep going on.dont go too far to shun medical field for ur son.??Woods may be dingy dark and deep but we have promises to keep, and miles to go before we sleep ??

Shalu gupta    2017/04/25 09:32:00

Agree with you Dr. Aparna. Her sister's remark shows how much moral corruption has occurred in our society.... Never mind the disheartening remarks... keep up the good work....May God compensate you for the same.

Abdul Azeem Khan    2017/04/25 09:30:51

We respect ur feelings Dr.Aparna and totally understand what type of mental assault u would have gone through . This has become a part of medical life You are our hope so don't step back wen u have not done anything wrong and make it the beginning of a new erra in medical profession.

Dr.Meenu    2017/04/25 09:30:36

I completely support your actions. You have the right to refuse and resign from treating a patient of an ungrateful relative. But do continue the goodwork...There will be people who need you and appreciate you

Dr Pooja Rastogi    2017/04/25 09:30:05

We work so hard for our patients ,this is what we in return.

Dr Narayan    2017/04/25 09:22:30

now a days there is very bad atmosphere for medical person and faith goes far away, so we should remember dr. Asthana(munnabhai vale)!! Don't make friends or family to patient, treat them as ill body and never attach to them!!!

Dr Ankit Mali    2017/04/25 09:07:32

I support your action.

Dr.Devendra Verma     2017/04/25 09:01:07

The entire doctor fraternity is with you. It's true that your compassion and dedication is of no value once patient starts improving OR survives after your efforts. No one appreciates and acknowledges the efforts put in by you. God bless.

Dr. G. S. Butani     2017/04/25 08:43:40

It bitter truth that v face almost every day. Better to stop serving for humanity. It's well said that one must play safe.

Dr jaspreet kaur     2017/04/25 08:00:45

Totally agree with your point of view. Drs only have a bond of trust with their patients, once no trust, so need to take care of that patient.

DR MEERA RASTOGI    2017/04/25 07:58:54

Dear Dr Aparna, As doctors we try to achieve medical excellence for our personal satisfaction. But this satisfaction tends to merge with our ambition and we push our junior colleagues to do more.Sometimes it does wonders and sometimes it fails. This particular incidence teaches us that we have to be practical. We need to giive more time to our family and friends. The medical profession is no longer the same and we all must understand it.

Biswajit Paul    2017/04/25 07:53:30

Dr. Bhaskar U R hurt emotionally but you must understand that such things happen in every profession. In our country it happens even with the army persons. They defend our country but many times I have seen them running after TTE's in trains begging for a berth, while returning home on leave from border posts, but getting humiliated. How many of us come to their defence? Have U ever heard them say " we are not going to defend our country"

Harish Jethwani    2017/04/25 07:52:41

This is ridiculous you treat a patient then the family blames you for misinformation. What you did was right as you knew the situation better.

dr Harsh Chaturvedi     2017/04/25 07:43:59

Hats off u mam we appreciate ur feeling

Dr preeti agarwal    2017/04/25 07:34:57

Dr.Bhaskar , I agree with you, our job is really thankless , the pt wants miracles from us, as if we have magic wand in our hand ; just put on the body and pt is cured.it good decision of yours is very correct for your child to suffers the same tension as you had.i too had told my son to follow his own path as he hated our profession due to tension we had.

Garima Srivastava     2017/04/25 07:28:28

The medical profession is fast losing its charm. The pain and agony of Dr Bhaskar can be understood.

Dr Gopal Maheshwari    2017/04/25 07:26:49

Yes it has happened with me also, especially when we get emotionally connected with our patients,I have also asked my Pt to leave my treatment and see someone whom they consider better bcoz for me trust between Pt and doctor plays important role best is we should be professional

Dr Sonu singh    2017/04/25 07:26:34

Dr Bhaskar I can understand your pain and anguish. Time has come to play, safe never accept the challenges. It takes whole life to develop the reputation and ungrateful patients, relatives ,society and the government nobody appreciates the life you have spent to develop the expertise.

Dr Deepak Pandharpurkar     2017/04/25 07:18:34

Totally understand your emotions, you've taken a bold position. I just hope that your colleagues in the team are standing by you at this point of time.

Dr ADARSH KUMAR     2017/04/25 07:14:19

Whatever is happening in medical circles for last few years is not good for doctors; that's understandable but what is worse is that at the end of some time; it will be patients and the society in general which will suffer as the bond between patient and doctor is jeopardized and therefore it is prudent for the society to wake up and give due respect to doctors and their sacrifices for their children not to suffer.

drsubhashchawla@gmail.com     2017/04/25 06:56:08

Kudos Dr Aparna!

Dr Bhaskar.we are passing through a turbulent phase. We have to b selective in choosing the pts and Don go out of way .stop all emergencies. Except our family and friends.

In every contract there may come a point where you say 'thus far no further'. Medical health care delivery system us no exception. You are no less important than the patient. No one must compromise from Hus /her dignity. You can impart health only till such time when you are yourself healthy physically and mentally.

I support Dr Bhaskar. We as doctors survive on challeng's sometimes making them centrepoint in our life. But if society or relatives wants to abuse doctors then it's better to walk away rather than doing work just to pacify others.

Dr Deepshikha    2017/04/25 02:19:58

Dr Bhaskar , I support your actions. In future if doctors are not available for challanging cases / dying patient , the entire society would be responsible for that.
