this man posed  as a doctor at aiims for five months
Adnan Khurram

New Delhi: Adnan Khurram, a 19-year-old medical aspirant ,was arrested on Saturday for impersonating as an AIIMS doctor. Khurram, who is from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, has been posing as AIIMS doctor for the last five months.

Interestingly, in these five months, he made friends in various departments of the premier institute and actively participated in the events organised for doctors. But he ran out of luck at a marathon event at AIIMS where a few doctors got suspicious about his identity.  According to police,  he has a sound 'knowledge' of medicines, and has crammed the names of many senior doctors and head of the departments at AIIMS.

According to doctors at AIIMS, Khurram would roam around wearing the lab coat and stethoscope all the time. He introduced himself differently to different doctors-- he would call himself a junior resident doctor to some and an undergraduate medical student to others. He even became part of some of the WhatsApp groups of doctors.  What helped  Khurram  is the fact that there are around 2,000 resident doctors at AIIMS and not everyone, of course,  knows each other personally.

It is still not clear why Khurram posed as a doctor as he has been constantly changing his statements. One of the reasons he has given for his crime is that he wanted to get medical help for his family on a priority basis. But he also told the police that he liked to spend time with doctors, and that he wanted to be a doctor. What is clear is that he loved being seen as a doctor as he has put several pix on social media wearing lab coat and a stethoscope.

Khurram has been charged under sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Hauz Khas Police Station.
